If you are looking for prescriptive help in working at an embassy, I believe, for the US anyway, on the job training is your only bet. If you're looking at getting through the US foreign service exam, it's probably not as helpful as a more social focus in the role playing/problem solving exercises. However, econ and poly-sci (especially economics) are more rigorous than the softer fields like Psychology or Sociology. At least in the eyes of recruiters.

If you are looking at a career and thinking that the disciplines would help you understand the environments you are stationed in, both fields are integral. Political science and economics share foci such as game theory, rational choice theory and institutional theory which is pretty substantial right now in explaining global, national and local politics.

A major in economics with a later shot at pol-sci in grad school would mean a lot to the government hiring office.

Good luck to you

When you work in a embassy you need good diplomacy skills, polical science will help you with this. You are representing your country, and wealth reflects your country and economics help. I hope this helps you but im not very sure.
