Outsourcing seems to be affecting a lot of American white collar workers today. First it was blue collar workers who lost their jobs because sweatshop laborers in third world countries could do the same job for $1 a day. Now lots of trained professionals in America (engineers, computer programmers) are losing their jobs because very educated, trained people in India can do the same job for $10 or $20 a day.

My question is to the white collar Americans who are losing their jobs: whatcha gonna do about it???

Is there anything that CAN be done?
Is there anything that SHOULD be done?
Or is this just the natural process or globalization and evolution of the itnernational economy?

There's an excellent video you should watch.

It's called: "Commanding Heights - The Battle for the World Economy."

Based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Daniel Yergin. It presents both sides of globalization.

Needless to say, I found it quite powerful and moving.

I'll address the second half of your question:

Stay abreast of what's happening in the world economy, read the signs and place yourself in the best possible place you can be. This means constantly improving your education and job skills, so you can switch jobs or your career in short order.

If you seriously think anyone in India would do professional work...for $20 a day you are nuts...they get paid just as well...and it's really not their fault if the United States is so lacking the educated "professionals" to do the work....So, what was the question....what are you gonna do about it?? I would suggest...Moving to India! Have a good day =P

Differentiate your skills! I'd personally get a job that needs skills that:

1. is different from the major skills that people in India, or in that case, China has

2. needs constant upgrading to prevent my job from being taken away (in a company that provides retraining free or subsidised)

3. never gets eliminated as easily, otherwise always in demand, such as teaching and services!

Globalisation never was a totally positive thing, not like the way people painted it to be...
